Roofing quotes confuse a lot of homeowners because suppliers talk in "squares" while you measured your house in feet. I have been on jobs where someone multiplied floor area by pitch incorrectly and ordered four extra bundles that sat in the garage for years. This calculator bridges that gap: enter the horizontal footprint, pick your pitch, account for eave overhang, add a waste allowance, and get sloped roof area, squares, and shingle bundles in one shot.

Start with house base area—the flat ground footprint the roof covers, not the sloped surface. Use square feet, square meters, square yards, or smaller units as needed. Select roof pitch as rise per 12 inches of run (6/12 is a common suburban pitch). Enter how far the eaves stick out beyond the walls; the tool adds that perimeter strip to the footprint before applying the pitch factor. Set waste percentage for cuts, hips, valleys, and starter courses—10% is a reasonable default for a simple gable.

Pitch turns a flat footprint into the actual surface area water and shingles travel across—like unfolding a ramp onto the ground.

Step 1: Adjusted footprint with eaves

The tool estimates a square footprint from base area, then adds eave overhang along the perimeter before pitch correction.

Step 2: Pitch factor

Pitch Factor = √(12² + Rise²) ÷ 12

A 6/12 pitch gives a factor of about 1.118—meaning the sloped surface is roughly 11.8% larger than the horizontal projection.

Step 3: Roof area and squares

Roof Area = Footprint × Pitch Factor × (1 + Waste ÷ 100)

Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100

Bundles = Ceiling(Squares) × 3

Three bundles per square is typical for standard asphalt shingles; heavy architectural lines or high-wind ratings may differ—confirm on the product label.

What is the difference between base area and roof area?

Base area is the horizontal footprint—the shadow the house casts at noon. Roof area is the sloped surface you actually shingle, always larger than the footprint when pitch is greater than flat. The pitch factor converts between them.

How much waste should I add?

Simple rectangular gables often need 10%. Roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, or hips generate more cut waste—use 15–20%. It is cheaper to return an unused bundle than to stop mid-job waiting for a delivery.

Does this work for metal or tile roofing?

The area and pitch math applies to any roofing material. Bundle counts are specific to standard asphalt shingle packaging. Metal panels and concrete tile use different unit sizes—use the area output and check coverage per piece with your manufacturer.
