How to Use This Engine Horsepower Calculator
Dyno time costs money, but your time slip is free. When I have modified a street car and wanted a ballpark power figure before deciding on the next upgrade, quarter-mile data got me close enough to compare runs consistently. This tool offers two drag-strip methods—elapsed time and trap speed—each backed by classic automotive formulas.
Elapsed Time (ET) method
- Enter Vehicle Weight. Include driver, fluids, and cargo in pounds, tons, or kilograms.
- Enter Quarter-Mile ET. Type elapsed time in seconds (minutes, hours, or days also supported via dropdown).

Trap-Speed method
- Enter Vehicle Weight. Same total race weight as above.
- Enter Trap Speed. Use the speed at the finish line—mph, km/h, or m/s.

Engine Horsepower Formulas and Practical Applications
Quarter-mile estimates treat acceleration as a physics problem: moving a given mass to a terminal speed (or through a fixed distance in a fixed time) requires a predictable amount of power. These are empirical shortcuts from decades of drag racing—not substitute for a calibrated dyno.
Elapsed Time method
Horsepower = Weight ÷ (ET ÷ 5.825)³
Weight must be in pounds and ET in seconds internally. A slow launch or traction loss lengthens ET without changing true engine power, which is why trap speed is often the more stable indicator.
Trap-Speed method
Horsepower = Weight × (Speed ÷ 234)³
Speed is converted to mph before the formula runs. Example: a 5,000-lb vehicle trapping at 70 mph gives HP = 5000 × (70/234)³ ≈ 143 HP—a quick sanity check against what the car feels like on the top end.
Standard Units and Conversion Tables
The constants 5.825 and 234 assume US customary inputs after conversion. Wrong units silently skew results.
- Weight: Converted to pounds. One US ton = 2,000 lb; one kilogram ≈ 2.205 lb.
- Elapsed time: Converted to seconds. Quarter-mile ET is almost always quoted in seconds at the strip.
- Trap speed: Converted to mph. Timing systems at US tracks report mph at the finish beam.
- Output: Mechanical horsepower (same HP unit as US automotive specs).
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these quarter-mile horsepower estimates exact?
No. They are physics-based ballpark figures. Traction, aerodynamic drag, gearing, altitude, and weather all shift elapsed time and trap speed, so results vary run to run and from dyno readings.
Should I include my own weight in the calculation?
Yes. Enter total race weight—vehicle with fluids, driver, passenger if applicable, and cargo. Omitting occupant weight inflates the horsepower estimate.
Which method is more accurate—ET or trap speed?
Trap speed usually tracks power more closely because it reflects terminal velocity. Elapsed time is sensitive to launch traction and driver skill, so a bad launch can skew ET-based estimates low.
What weight should I enter for my vehicle?
Use curb weight plus driver, fuel, and anything you had in the car during the run. Scale weights at the track are ideal; otherwise manufacturer curb weight plus about 180 to 200 pounds for the driver is a common starting point.
Can I use this for motorcycles?
The same formulas apply if you have quarter-mile ET or trap speed and total weight in pounds. Enter rider plus gear in the weight field for a realistic estimate.
