How to Use This Conversion Calculator
Juggling unit conversions across a recipe, a road trip, and a science homework sheet in the same afternoon is scratchpad chaos. One minute you need Fahrenheit to Celsius, the next it is gallons to liters—and searching separate converters wastes time. This tool handles length, temperature, area, volume, weight, and time in one place.
- Select Conversion Type. Choose Length, Temperature, Area, Volume, Weight / Mass, or Time. The From and To dropdowns update automatically.
- Enter Value to Convert. Type the number you want to translate.
- Pick From and To units. Select the unit you have and the unit you need from the paired dropdowns.
- Press Convert. Review the Result field, shown up to six decimal places or in scientific notation for extreme values.
For dedicated weight-only or height-only workflows, the Weight Converter and Height Calculator offer focused interfaces. For physics problems involving speed, distance, and time together, see the Speed Calculator.
Conversion Calculator Formulas and Practical Applications
Most categories share the same pattern—convert to a base unit, then convert out. Temperature is the exception because scales have different zero points.
Result = (Value × From Factor) ÷ To Factor
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
K = °C + 273.15
Example: converting 100 km to miles goes through meters as the base—100 km becomes 100,000 m, then divides by the mile factor (1,609.344 m) to get about 62.137 miles. For temperature, 68°F → (68 − 32) × 5/9 = 20°C.
Standard Units and Conversion Tables
Quick reference anchors for common conversions this tool supports:
- Length: 1 mile = 1.609 km; 1 inch = 2.54 cm; 1 yard = 3 feet.
- Weight: 1 kg = 2.205 lb; 1 oz = 28.35 g; 1 stone = 14 lb.
- Volume: 1 US gallon = 3.785 L; 1 UK gallon = 4.546 L; 1 cup = 8 fl oz.
- Temperature: Water freezes at 0°C (32°F) and boils at 100°C (212°F).
- Area: 1 acre = 43,560 ft²; 1 hectare = 10,000 m².
- Time: 1 hour = 60 min = 3,600 s; months use a 30.44-day average in this tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does temperature conversion work differently?
Celsius and Fahrenheit use different zero points, so you cannot multiply by a single factor like length conversions. The tool converts through Celsius as an intermediate step, which keeps Kelvin conversions accurate too.
Are US and UK gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters; a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 liters. Select the correct gallon type in the volume category to avoid recipe or fuel measurement errors.
How precise are the results?
Results display up to six decimal places for normal ranges. Very small or very large values switch to scientific notation automatically so you do not lose significant digits.
Which categories does this converter support?
Length, temperature, area, volume, weight/mass, and time. Changing Conversion Type refreshes the From and To unit dropdowns for that category.
Can I convert between different categories?
No. Each conversion stays within one category. To go from length to area, convert the underlying measurement first, then use the area category separately.
