What-If Grade Calculator
Plan your target grade
How to Use This What-If Grade Calculator
Finals week is when "what if I ace the exam?" turns into frantic calculator tapping on a phone that rounds wrong. This tool combines your weighted running average, a target class grade, and the final's syllabus weight in one form—then tells you the exam score required to get there. Subject names are optional labels; only grade and weight columns drive the math.
- Fill assignment rows. Enter each graded item's percentage score and its weight from the syllabus. Rows need both fields to count. Add rows with + Add row as needed.
- Review the summary. After Calculate, the current average and letter snapshot update from counted rows only.
- Set your goal. Enter target class grade (%) and final exam weight (%). Counted row weights plus final weight must equal 100% when solving for the required final score.
- Share your plan. Use Share Calculation to copy a URL that reloads rows and goal fields—handy when comparing scenarios with a study group.

What-If Grade Formulas and Practical Applications
Your running average is a weighted mean of everything entered so far. The final blends that average with one last exam score using the weight your syllabus assigns—like mixing two paint cans where the final is the bigger bucket when it's worth 30% or more.
Current weighted average
Current = Σ(Grade × Weight) / Σ(Weight)
Required final score
Required Final = (Target − Current × (1 − f)) / f
Letter grades shown use A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, else F. Example: current 78%, target 80%, final weight 25% (so f = 0.25) needs final score (80 − 78 × 0.75) / 0.25 = 86%—a realistic study target instead of a vague "do better."
Common planning scenarios
- Seeing whether an A is still possible after a weak midterm.
- Testing how a 10-point final swing changes your letter grade.
- Building a shareable link for an advisor or tutor to review your numbers.
Standard Units and Conversion Tables
All inputs are percentages. Weights describe each item's share of the total course grade; they should sum to 100% when the final weight is included and you want a required-final answer.
| Letter (snapshot) | Minimum % |
|---|---|
| A | 90 |
| B | 80 |
| C | 70 |
| D | 60 |
| F | Below 60 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How is my current average calculated here?
Only rows with both grade and weight filled are included. The tool computes Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) using high-precision decimals.
What formula finds the score I need on the final?
With running average C, final weight fraction f, and target T, needed final x = (T − C·(1 − f)) / f.
Why must weights plus final equal 100%?
The solver needs a complete picture of how much of the course is already graded versus riding on the final. If your rows only cover partial categories, adjust weights to match what is actually entered.
Can I share my inputs?
Yes—Share Calculation after you calculate stores rows and goal fields in the URL.
Will this match my school's gradebook exactly?
Policies on dropped scores, curves, and rounding vary. Use this for planning; confirm official grades in your portal. See all grade calculators for GPA and quiz tools.
