How to Use This VAT Calculator
European invoices show one price; American receipts show another. When you need to back VAT out of a gross total or add it to a net quote, the math is identical to sales tax but the labels differ. I keep both calculators bookmarked depending on which side of the Atlantic the invoice came from.
- Choose a mode. Add VAT from net price, or Remove VAT from a gross total.
- Enter the price. Net price in Add VAT mode; gross price in Remove VAT mode.
- Enter VAT rate. Standard rate for your jurisdiction (e.g. 20% UK, 19% Germany).
- Press Calculate. Review before VAT (net), VAT amount, and after VAT (gross).

VAT Formulas and Practical Applications
VAT is a percentage of the taxable price. B2C prices in VAT-inclusive countries often show gross totals; B2B quotes may start from net. Know which direction you need before picking a mode.
Add VAT (net to gross)
VAT = Net × (Rate ÷ 100)
Gross = Net + VAT
A €100 net item at 20% VAT adds €20 for a €120 gross total.
Remove VAT (gross to net)
Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
VAT = Gross − Net
A €120 receipt at 20% implies €100 net and €20 VAT—not €24 (a common mistake of applying 20% to the gross).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add VAT to a net price?
Select Add VAT mode, enter net price and VAT rate. VAT equals net times rate divided by 100, and gross equals net plus VAT.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Select Remove VAT mode and enter gross price and VAT rate. Net equals gross divided by one plus rate divided by 100.
Which VAT rate should I enter?
Enter the standard rate for your country or region, such as 20 percent in the UK or 19 percent in Germany. Reduced rates and exemptions are not modeled.
Is VAT the same as sales tax?
The math is similar for a flat rate, but VAT regimes have invoice rules, exemptions, and reduced rates that this tool does not model.
Does this handle reverse charge or B2B rules?
No. This calculator applies a single flat VAT rate for quick estimates only.
