How to Use This Discount Calculator
"40% off" on the sign, but the register shows something else—or you found the sale price and want to know if it is actually a good deal. I run both directions here: percent off an original, or reverse-engineer the percent from two prices.
- Choose a mode. Original price plus discount percent, or original price plus sale price.
- Enter original price. The pre-discount sticker or MSRP.
- Enter discount percent or sale price. Depends on the mode you selected.
- Press Calculate. Review original price, discount amount, discount percent, sale price, and you save.

Discount Formulas and Practical Applications
A discount shaves a percentage off the original price. The sale price is what you actually pay; "You Save" is the dollar amount kept in your pocket.
From discount percent
Discount = Original × (Rate ÷ 100)
Sale Price = Original − Discount
$200 with 25% off saves $50 for a $150 sale price.
From two prices
Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100
Original $200, sale $150 works out to 25% off—not 33% (a common mistake of dividing by sale price).
Stacked discounts
This tool handles one discount at a time. For "take an extra 20% off clearance," run the first discount, then use the result as the new original for a second pass.
